I am getting more disappointed and aggravated with this series with each book. There's less story and just more people yammering at each other. I don't deny that there's still a lot of interesting stuff going on, but it's getting to be less and less of the book. And I have gotten just severely irritated by the constant silly chatter of the characters.There's a Nachzehrer hunting Violet, so Natalie and Violet argue for 10 pages about it before Violet does anything. There's another one hunting Violet again, so she and Reid argue for 10 pages about what to do before Violet does anything. Doc and Cornelius may be in life-threatening danger, so Natalie is giving tongue to Cooper and hugging and spit-shaking with Violet while they swear eternal friendship instead of rushing to help people who may be dying!! And this kind of thing just keeps going all through the book. I'm getting tired of it.There's also the plot of the story. There's isn't much of one. There's just a bunch of scenes of people talking and eating. And every once in a while, Violet has to kill a monster. There are so many plot elements floating around and some of them go back to the very first book of the series. I don't know how I am supposed to keep track of them all. There's an imp on the loose that we know zero about. There's the Nachzehrer and an unknown number of bounty hunters. There's the whole "timekeeper" subplot that is too confusing to understand. There's the Hessler ghost. And creeping around the edges of all this is Ray Underhill and his threats against Violet. Can't just one plot point be resolved and forgotten?? No, more just keeps getting heaped on top. Now, there's a cave full of taxidermied monsters and Dominick Masterson wondering where his liderc is.Then there's the characters. Everyone seems to talk like a teenager. Snide nicknames are rampant. Everyone seems to be making nasty gibes at each other, except for the lovers who are cooing at each other like 16 year olds. I wished that at least one person would talk like an adult. Violet and Prudence act like 2 year olds having temper tantrums, apparently just so Doc would have an opportunity to prove he is now mentally stronger than Prudence. I think a scenario less demeaning to the two female characters could have been thought of to prove this point.I remember the first books of this series. Violet would do some silly things, but she was a gritty single mom trying to support herself and her two children by selling real estate. In this book she didn't seem to spend any time with her kids except at mealtimes. Doc was spending more time with them than she did. Also, she didn't seem to be trying to be much of a realtor. She was in the office for half a day and did nothing that was about buying or selling real estate. It is ironic that at one point she laments not being able to just sell real estate and support her kids. She doesn't seem to be trying very hard at either one.If the future books of this series remain on the current trajectory, I will quit reading them. I gave up on the Jackrabbit Junction series after three books because they were just full of people yammering at each other with no real plot. As much as I have enjoyed the Deadwood series, I'm not going to bother reading more of the same.
