I really enjoyed “The Wonder Test,” a domestic mystery wrapped inside a thriller leavened with international espionage and FBI procedure.New York City FBI agent Lina Connerly has just been widowed and lost her father to illness. Highly competent and admired, wholly dedicated to the bureau, most of her mistakes have been personal rather than professional. And then one day, she screws up on a case—or, at least, she thinks she has—which, along with the needs of teen son, Rory, prompt her to take a leave without pay from work and move to Northern California to wind up her father's estate and close and sell the family home.She enrolls Rory in the public high school serving this very affluent community filled with Silicon Valley types, a community from which several teen children have disappeared only to reappear, somewhat worse for wear but refusing to say what happened. That shouldn’t affect Rory. He’s too busy getting acclimated and trying to catch up to the rest of his class, all of whom are studying a unique curriculum geared to “The Wonder Test.” It’s a curriculum to which the whole town is committed, and which Rory handles masterfully. But then, Rory’s new girlfriend disappears. Which means it’s time for Lina to get to work and discover where the girl is and why she and others were taken.Well-written, well-plotted, with tons of conflict and lots of twists and turns, “The Wonder Test” kept me turning its pages. There are a number of mysteries here—lots of questions to keep readers guessing—and more than a few suspenseful scenes designed to keep eyes glued to the page. Author Michelle Richmond is particularly adept at creating interesting characters and relationships. I liked Lina and Rory very much and found some of Lina’s thoughts and approaches to parenting interesting. And Ms. Richmond knows how to create, not just a villain, but a panoply of villains, some of them merely venal, others irredeemable.I was most impressed by Ms. Richmond’s attention to detail, which was most apparent in her settings, and in her description of how Lina solved various problems and challenges thrown in her way. In other words, I felt like I was in New York City and Northern California and I was intrigued by the various technologies and techniques Lina employed.I did find some aspects of the novel a little far-fetched and/or not as fleshed out as they might have been, particularly regarding the “wonder test” itself.But all in all, a very good read.
